Post How to crab scratch Reply with quote
Hey guys - I just answered this question on you tube & thought I'd share it with ya!
xx

Q:
any tips on crab scratches you do them mad good - DaveChorowskiMusic YouTube

A:
Make sure the fader curve setting is set to the tightest fade possible & hold the fader close to the wall of the mixer so you can make very small movements to get the quick distinct cuts. Hold the pad of your thumb loosely on the inside of the fader and let it act like a spring so it sort of automatically bounces the fader against the wall of the mixer as your fingers tap it from the outside. (It’s really all about getting the perfect amount of loose tension on the thumb.)

The tips of your fingers should roll off the fader going from pinky, ring, middle to pointer in that order if you are using all 4 fingers. If you are using 3 fingers start with the ring finger and if you are crabbing with 2 fingers start from the middle finger. Make sure you relax your hand & separate your fingers enough to get the cuts to come thru clearly.

I suggest practicing this technique on a skipless/endless tone with a locked groove like the one found at the end of the Bikini Wax record (available @ www.5starrecords.com) so that you can perfect the fader action before combining it with your other hand on the record. Once you get the fader technique down try using shorter sounds and moving the record back & forth with your other hand. As far as combos go, my favorites are combining transforms & flares with the crabs.

Transforms work really well with crabs because the crab is essentially just a multi-finger transform and flares combine nicely with crabs because it adds an additional cut to the pattern without much work involved and crabs help you to perform the double, triple & quadruple click flare patterns much faster than if you were clicking with just one finger.

If you wanna learn more about Djing (mixing, scratching & beat juggling) I teach all these techniques on my dvd series available @ www.how2dj.com - Hope this helps! xoxo, shortee
